Tim Gane's vivid, neony music is the perfect complement to Peter Strickland's cult hit, In Fabric
This is a limited edition vinyl release of the original Cavern Of Anti-Matter score for Peter Strickland’s horror film In Fabric. 6 sides of vinyl in a full colour Julian House designed sleeve with download card. Previously a 7” of one of the main themes, Mannequin Metric, sold out in seconds and is now almost impossible to find.
Interviewed in The Wire about the soundtrack, Strickland commented: “I was a fan of Stereolab and so much of the music I fell in love with was because of their recommendations whenever they were interviewed. Using Steven Stapleton’s music in my first film indirectly came about from first hearing Nurse With Wound on the joint Crumb Duck release with Stereolab. Stereolab were a whole world, what with their championing of other bands through their Duophonic label. After meeting Tim and talking about film it made complete sense to ask him if he would do something. That was unusual in that I didn’t have any specific project in mind. Tim sent me some very long demos to help me write, he implicitly understood that longer tracks are more conducive to writing. Elements of some of those demos worked their way into In Fabric. It was a luxury to work that way, usually, musicians are only approached after writing”.
Tim Gane is now based in Berlin and has a studio which he self-deprecatingly describes as a bit of a mess. The sounds he's come up with are a sort of finessed outsiderism made from bits of old kit and new kit and crackly connections and mainly his brilliant talent. For In Fabric he’s referenced John Barry and Krzysztof Komeda and others too. The main theme is gorgeous, maybe Stereolab could have almost played something like this on Music For The Amorphous Body Study Center. But In Fabric is not so benign - it becomes heavier and heavier, the cues more and more fucked up as we move through it. The film is almost horror in places, and Tim Gane, a fan of early industrial music, is ready.
Somehow the whole project feels both important and specialist at the same time. Peter Strickland and Julian House (film design, inserts) and Tim Gane have made something original from their weird in sync imaginations. My colleague, Mark Hillier, has described In Fabric as pervert cinema. Well, this is pervert music but it’s something else too. Expertly mastered by the great Bo Kondren at Calyx, on its own it doesn’t feel too detached from the film, it has the same transformative quality as the best Stereolab and Cavern Of Anti Matter music. You reach for it and it makes things feel different.
