The Complete Candid Recordings of Charles Mingus - 4 LP Set Mosaic MR4-111
Up for auction is a 4-LP box set of the recordings made the great bassist, composer, and bandleader, Charles Mingus. It was 1960, and the influence of the newly-discovered Ornette Coleman was being felt strongly by many jazzmen. Mingus' response was his most avant-garde album, Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, recorded with a stellar quartet, including Eric Dolphy (reeds), Ted Curson (tp) and Dannie Richmond (dr). This is Mingus at his insane best and contains my absolute favorite song title of all time, All the Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother. Other albums resulting from these recordings include The Jazz Life, Mingus and Newport Rebels with Roy Eldridge, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Bley, Booker Ervin, Charles McPherson, and Lonnie Hillyer.
The reissue was released in the mid-1980's by the Connecticut-based reissue house, Mosaic. The limited edition of 7500 copies has been sold out for years. This copy number 0097. I was the original buyer, and I have taken good care of it ever since. The LP's, box and booklet are in excellent condition. There is one flaw: Mosaic mislabeled the sides of the first disc, so I wrote "OTHER SIDE" on the labels. You might be able to see this in the picture below.
