Description
Original pressing of the only LP reissue of Charles Mingus "Music Written for Monterey, 1965. Not heard... played in its entirety" on the limited edition (#2338) East Coasting 12.001. The two record set in its gatefold cover is still sealed, with the rare EP of unissued material from Mingus' September 18, 1965 performance. This material, though one of the four albums released by Mingus on his Jazz Worshop label, was never issued by Fantasy, who purchased the Debut and Jazz Workshop catalogue from Mingus. The reason is that the tapes had been destroyed by Capitol Records when Mingus failed to retrieve them from a Capitol storage facility. This reissue was supervised by and co-produced by his widow, Sue Mingus, who included letters, Mingus' own hand-drawn cartoons and other interesting ephemera for the gatefold and insert. Aside from the extraordinary music, what makes this recording unique are the extended announcements by Mingus which, at one point, has him "firing" part of the band (he actually tells them to leave the stage, rehearse the material, and come back when they know their parts).
Personnel includes Charles McPherson, Julius Watkins, Jimmy Owens, and Hobart Dotson.
