Original Strata-East LP 7413 (Promo) 

Condition (play-test/Goldmine)
Record: Ex. Clean with great presence & minimal noise  Cover: VG+. Slight ring wear + promo stamps on back 

From 1974 comes the debut album as a leader by the young trumpeter Charles Sullivan with all tunes composed and arranged by Charles as well. Joined by Strata-East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano, Alto’s Sonny Fortune, Onaje and Sharon Freeman additional keyboard work, Alex Blake and Anthony Jackson, perform bass duties, percussion from Alphonse Mouzon, Billy Hart and Lawrence Killian with vocals by DeeDee Bridgewater make for an intriguing date of well executed originals.

Where is he now? Good question; I know he changed his name to “Kamau Muata Adilifu” (say that fast three times). I saw him perform with McCoy Tyner in the seventies and I know he also recorded with Woody Shaw, Dollar Brand, Sam Rivers and Ricky Ford and performed as well with Yusef Lateef (whose original name interestingly enough was Bill Evans-not the pianist- would you believe?)

Wherever he is, Charles could play, compose and arrange with a sound that you can hear enjoys its own unique voice. I can only hope he is still into it which I can’t imagine he wouldn’t be with his talent. This album is truly a unique and rare document dedicated to that talent that you can share.
