Charlie Parker "New Sounds in Modern Music, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" (Savoy MG 9000 and MG 9001) 10" LPs. The first printings (maroon label, 1951) of the first two releases on a major label under his own name, these recordings include some of the all-time great songs by bebop innovator Charlie "Bird" Parker. Vol. 1 includes Side 1: Now's the Time, Donna Lee, Chasing the Bird, and Red Cross; Side 2: Ko-Ko, Warming Up the Riff, Half Nelson and Sipping at Bells. Vol. 2 includes Side 1: Billie's Bounce, Cheryl, Milestones, and Another Hair Do; Side 2: Thriving on a Riff, Buzzy, Little Willie Leaps, and Klaunstance. Both albums are G. Vol. 1 cover is G and Vol. 2 is G- with 3" scotch tape on top and bottom. Original wax wrappers. Grading is conservative. Klaunstance, the final song on Vol. 2, has a needle mark across Band 4, Side B and a couple of other marks between Band 3 and 4, all of which I tried to detail in photos; otherwise minimal marks or scuffs. Both records play fine on my turntable, with relatively little crackle or hiss. Have really good punch.
These records are not only desirable for their historic value as the first records by Charlie Parker as leader, but are also desirable for the fact that the recordings on the subsequent 12" releases were remastered and are considered by some to be inferior.
