Description
A nice copy of this sought-after 1958 set of stereo LPs. The heavy vinyl has some superficial paper-rubs but is basically still glossy and surfaces are very quiet (test-played on Technics direct-drive SL-1200 turntable with Shure M75ED cartridge). There is very little evidence of spindle-marks on any of the records. They all have their original poly-lined heavy paper inner sleeves, in excellent condition.
I have carefully checked each side visually and play-tested areas that appear to have any damage. I have set out the results below:
Side 1 (matrix number YBX 7-FR5): very good, just a couple of very superficial marks;
Side 2 (matrix number YBX 8-FR3): has a minor scuff about 3 cms from the outer edge that is not audible, and another (about 1 cm) near the end of the side that causes about 10 ticks (3, followed by about 6 or 7 a few revolutions later);
Side 3 (matrix number YBX 9-FR5): has a longer scuff extending radially most of the way across the record (visible on the pictures), but although this looks more obvious it is in fact very superficial and on playing the whole side through headphones I was unable to hear any ticks associated with the scuff;
Side 4 (matrix number YBX 10-FR5): one slight scuff which plays through without producing any ticks;
Side 5 (matrix number YBX 11-FR9): one extremely light mark, about 1 cm (not audible);
Side 6 (matrix number YBX 12-FR6): a couple of very light marks, no audible effects.
Overall the defects noted above are very superficial and only the one on Side 2 produces any audible distraction (and then only for a few seconds). However, in view of the interest there is likely to be in this set, I want to be as specific as possible about its condition. The pressings are of high quality and there is very little surface noise considering the age of the records. They are a pleasure to listen to, although, as with almost any records of this age, they have picked up some dust and would probably benefit from a careful clean.
When originally issued, this set was offered with an optional booklet/libretto which had to be purchased separately. That booklet is NOT included in the present set, although it does have a single-page leaflet detailing the cast and the track listing.
The box is in good condition overall, with the laminated front picture undamaged and still bearing the gold/red "EMI STEREOPHONIC RECORDING" sticker. The back is clean and undamaged. Inevitably the box corners have suffered some rubbing and loss of surface, but they are still securely glued and intact (see pictures). The gold-embossed spine is still in good condition and clearly legible.
