A great celebration of “West Coast” sound, jazz that very much launched with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker when they played together.
“Mulligan/Baker” gives us a nice mix of material, side 1 giving us music of the Mulligan-Baker Quartet with Gerry on sax, Chet on trumpet, Chico Hamilton on drums, and Carson Smith on bass. Selections are CARIOCCA, LINE FOR LYONS, MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT, BARK FOR BARKSDALE, TURNSTILE, LADY IS A TRAMP, and MY FUNNY VALENTINE.
Side 2 offers up Mulligan’s band playing FUNHOUSE, IDE’S SIDE, ROUNDHOUSE, KAPER, BWEEBIDA BOBBIDA, and MULLENIUM.
Side 3 has the Mulligan Sextet playing MULLIGAN’S TOO and LIMELIGHT with Chet Baker added in.
And, side 4 gives us the Chet Baker Quintet playing SO EASY, GO-GO, SEVEN BEEPS, and REARIN’ BACK.
