Chico Hamilton Quintet featuring Buddy Collette (rereleased as Spectacular!) is an album by drummer and bandleader Chico Hamilton's Quintet featuring multi-instrumentalist Buddy Collette, released on the Pacific Jazz label. The album was recorded in 1955 with one side recorded live and the other recorded in the studio.

So several times a summer we would go to the local country club for a family dinner. I was a restless, squirmy child, and in the interests of peace I was allowed to get down from the table early if I would just go outside-- and I did, to the swimming pool behind the restaurant, where there was not only an oasis of negative ions in the scorching Boise heat, but also a state of the art hi-fi overseen by someone with taste. It was here that I first heard Miles and Monk and Brubeck-- and this album. Of course one only heard the music, there was nothing to identify artist or album; but years later in college the movie club brought in "Jazz on a Summer's Day" and I recognized it immediately from at a guess two hearings 15 years earlier.

Graceful and interesting, I'm told that this was the inception of a sub genre called "chamber jazz." To my ears it sounds as though it must have been a formative root for the Grateful Dead's improvisatory stylings ( and I believe Lesh mentions John Lloyd, a later mainstay of the group, as an influence.)

"Blue Sands" is really the top track for me, but the album is pretty wall-to-wall. It is my Album of the Year for 1955, despite pretty stiff competition from Anita O'Day. 5 stars.
