Description
Children's Record Guild (CRG), 1950s, 39 albums (8 of which are 2-disc albums). Each 78 rpm record is about 6 minutes (both sides). This is an original-owner collection. According to rateyourmusic.com, "The Children's Record Guild was a record club for children. Each month a record (10", 78 rpm) would be sent to subscribers through the mail. Sometimes, 2-record sets were sent. Each record/set would have a story or theme that the songs revolved around (fairy tales, American history, educational). The records covered a wide variety of musical styles and instrumentation. The records were meant to entertain and educate at the same time. Some titles released by CRG were previously released on the label 'Young People's Records.'"
Some records are collections of songs on a single theme: seasonal, historical, domestic, or social. Others are narrated stories with songs interspersed as in a Broadway musical. Some of the double albums were meant to introduce children to classical music through story, but simple folks songs and children's songs predominate. Several albums were sung by Tom Glazer, a folk singer and balladeer who was invited by Eleanor Roosevelt to perform at the White House. Pete Seeger's album "Yankee Doodle and Other Folk Songs," originally released in 1947, appears here in its 1954 reissue in a generic cover because Seeger was then blacklisted as "un-American." Seeger also performs on "Train to the Zoo."
Paper album covers are in various conditions ranging from near mint to worn and mended with tape. No guarantee as to condition of the discs though presumably most are playable. Photos give some idea of the range of titles and themes, as well as condition.
