Description
Inherited from a relative, along with other stuff I am currently selling. Very rare UK mono first release of this seminal album. I did a bit of research on this album and discovered it is one of the most important albums of all time, and the recording which began the Skiffle craze in the UK. This LP features the very first recording of 'Rock Island Line' by Lonnie Donegan and his Skiffle Group - which even though was released on this album in December 1954, it wasn't released as a single until January 1956! I guess things moved slowly in those days! Actually, this is another reason why this LP is so rare as a first release - as 99% of these are actually re-issues bought when the skiffle craze took off in 1956. However, this is the very first release from 1954 and is very rare indeed! It has:-
1) Laminated 'CP' cover + 'scalloped' fold overs 2) 'Gold Print' Decca labels (re-issues are silver) 3) 'N' Tax code on the labels 4) No 'spine' text on back right (added on re-issues) 5) '54.12' date code printed in bottom right corner on the back of the cover 6) 1A/1A matrix's
So this one really is the very first release.
Grading:- Cover looks very nice. No splits or any other nasties. No writing etc. Few light creases confined to the edges. Cover still flat and laminate still quite shiny. Possible inking in to corner tips(?) - as they look a bit darker. Nice back of cover with only slight toning. No damage to fold overs. Possible faded name trace to very bottom of cover back - though its very hard to see. I can also see a small piece of clear tape on back opening edge. I will grade the cover Very Good. The record is super nice and is very bright and shiny indeed. It has No marks etc, and only 2 or 3 really light lines under a bright light. Plays really well too - though it does have some crackle in places. That said it has been sitting in my relatives collection for many many years - so no doubt a clean would help here, as it must have built up some static etc. I will grade it Very Good+. Labels have minimal spindles and look super. This album has clearly been seldom played.
