From the record label:
Chris Cornell’s indelible and indomitable legacy as both a vocal behemoth capable of multi-octave aggression and sensitive heart-on-sleeve crooner remains unmatched. On Carry On, his second solo album, the singer showcases both of these sides in equal measure, sometimes within the same song. Cornell was coming off the breakup of hard rock supergroup Audioslave, saying at the time that “someone that writes songs as much as me and has the energy and focus in terms of songwriting and performing is probably someone who's more akin to a solo artist.”
With that, he enlisted superproducer Steve Lillywhite to re-engage the riff-rock part of his musical brain; a part that was consciously missing with his solo debut. “There's enough distance between now and Soundgarden's last record," he told Spinner at the time. "I got to really write some riff-oriented heavier songs, which I haven't done in a long time. It was exciting."
Still, Cornell always imbues beauty within the album’s controlled chaos. See his gorgeous cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” the mysterious Bond theme song "You Know My Name," or opener “No Such Thing,” which balances furious rage with romantic, McCartneyesque vocal melodies.
