Description

Description:

The classic 1980 album Red Exposure by the uncompromising Chrome.
Often hailed as the San Francisco band’s greatest work, this was the fourth record to feature core members Damon Edge and Helios Creed, and stands as the definitive statement of Chrome’s idiosyncratic sound – a dystopian vision of the future through experimental space rock, punk-tinged rhythms and alien soundscapes.

On Red Exposure, the group harness the otherworldly noise of their earlier records while pushing further into warped, oblique pop structures. Edge’s vocals act more as another instrument than a narrative voice, painting stark images of humanity on the brink of destruction. Meanwhile, Creed’s guitar layers slash and shimmer across pulsing rhythms, loops and electronic experimentation – violent yet beautiful – creating a sound that still feels far ahead of its time.

This distillation of the band’s repertoire seemed to deconstruct rock ‘n’ roll itself, stripping away cliché and pushing into entirely new sonic territory. Over 40 years later, Red Exposure remains a vital listen – a futuristic slab of new-wave nihilism, recommended for fans of Space Rock, Krautrock, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide and beyond.
