This handsome LP from London (411 804-1, LP pressed in Holland / jacket printed in the UK, silver label, DDD stereo) features Kyung Wha-Chung’s magnificent accounts of Berg’s Violin Concerto “To the Memory of an Angel” and Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 1 Op. posth., both made with conductor Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in October 1983.

In reviewing Chung’s reading of Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 1, The Gramophone’s critic wrote:

“Kyung Wha Chung's blend of sweetness and strength in the Bartok is ideal, more vivid in both reflection and action than Menuhin, whose 1967 HMV recording shows its age. At first I feared that Chung might be tempted to over-interpret, but the performance as a whole is shaped and balanced by Solti as well as the music itself permits.”

These remarkable recordings were produced by Paul Myers and engineered by James Lock.

The striking cover photos of the artists were taken by Michael Chung (Chung) and Patrick Lichfield (Solti). There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Paul Griffiths, provided in English, French, and German.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. The only flaws barring a NM grading concern a cut to the upper-right corner (cut-out) and a bit of wear to the top edge. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
