ARTIST(s) / TITLE -  Clifford Brown / The Complete Blue Note and Pacific Jazz Recordings of Clifford Brown

Label / Year / Details - Mosaic Records, MR5-104, recordings from 1953 - 1954, issued in the early 1980s (probably 1984), 5 LP limited edition Box Set. With large glossy booklet containing text & pictures.

Vinyl Condition - LPs look barely played & are in NM- condition, booklet is sharp with some very minor creasing.

Jacket Condition - VG+ (very light scuffing, almost NM-)

Description -  Despite Clifford Brown's tragically short career in music (he died in a car wreck in 1954), his influence still looms large in the jazz world. The music here is hard bop at its finest - with players like Elmo Hope, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, Gigi Gryce, Lou Donalson, Jimmy Heath, Percy Heath, and Horace Silver. Interestingly, some of the material was recorded on the West Coast with the vaguard of the 'West Coast Jazz' movement - and they swing just as hard! This 5 LP box contains all of Clifford Brown's live & studio recordings for Blue Note & Pacific Jazz, including previously unissued Alternate Takes Large, glossy B&W booklet includes rare photos, a complete sessionography, and extensive notes by LaRue Brown Watson (Clifford's widow), Quincy Jones, and Ira Gitler.

This box set is from the collection of the noted music critic and writer David Prince.

GRADING: I follow the GOLDMINE method...

Still Sealed (self-explanatory) - I don't like to sell sealed LPs.

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect in every way, opened but never played.

Near Mint (NM or M-) A nearly perfect record with no obvious signs of wear. The LP jacket has no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable defects. No cut-out holes, cut corners, etc.

Very Good Plus (VG+) A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.
The LP jacket may have slight signs of wear, and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.

Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.

For me, anything below VG is not worth selling on E-bay (unless it's some sort of Mega-Rarity). The bottom line: a VG record must still be an enjoyable listening experience, despite its flaws.
