Known for his smooth tenor voice and emotive delivery, he was a major influence on later soul and R&B singers, including Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson.
As a solo artist, McPhatter released several chart-topping hits and became one of the first African-American musicians to gain crossover success in the early days of rock & roll. His contributions to music earned him a posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
