ABOUT COLIN JAMES (by DANNY LANNEN, Geelong Advertiser,September 2, 2014)
COLIN James made a lifetime mission of overcoming adversity and along the way became recognised as a ‘little giant’ of Australian entertainment.
His career as a country singer, variety television performer, songwriter and radio presenter spanned almost 60 years and included performances at Sydney Opera House, Seattle’s Coliseum Centre, Victoria’s Government House and at a papal visit.
He was hailed as a Telstra local legend, became a Barwon Disability Resource Council inaugural life member, was inducted in South Austtralia’s country music hall of fame and received an Order of Australia medal, now family and friends have mourned his death at 76.
Mr James was unable to walk and unable to attend school after having contracted Stills disease, a debilitating form of rheumatoid arthritis, aged 3.
Daughter Leanne Murphy said he refused to let life in a wheelchair hold him back.
“For someone who wasn’t supposed to live to see teenage years, he overcame incredible adversities. Nothing stopped him,” his daughter Leanne Murphy said.
Mr James lived for many years in Geelong before shifting to Bendigo several years ago.
He worked with Barwon disAbility Resource Council as an employment secretary, board chairman, committeeman and accommodation project manager and former council secretary Julie Kos said he united people.
“He was the conduit for some amazing friendships and an inspiring man,” she said.
“He was so strong and stubborn, there was just no stopping him.”
Mr James published an autobiography titled If I Can Do It ... and also twice released The Wheelies’ Handbook of Australia, a travel guide assessing accommodation and tourist attractions across Australia for people in wheelchairs.
Mr James died on August 26 and was farewelled at a funeral in Bendigo on Friday.
