Columbia 40027D- Sol Hoopii Novelty Trio - (A) E Pele E; (B) Papa Sia. Graded E. Pressed in Royal Blue Shellac! Columbia produced a number of Hawaiian 78s from this era on Royal Blue Shellac. This one was recorded 11/19/1930. Both sides play excellent with very low surface noise with the exception the first 25 seconds of (A) and the first 15 seconds of (B). The latter (B) noise is practically not worth mentioning whereas the noise at the start of (A) is a little more significant. I couldn’t really see anything on close inspection under high intensity lighting. In fact, both sides have very few visible imperfections. The (B) side has a 1/8” round needle mark which produces about 10 light ticks 2/3 of the way through. The grooves have no needle wear whatsoever. Sol Hoopii was one of the all-time greats of the Hawaiian steel guitar. These are very traditional authentic early Hawaiian music. ‘E Pele E’ is about the Kilauea volcano sung in the Hawaiian tongue.
