And while their haunting expressiveness has been widely appreciated, and the important role they played in breaking free of bop structures has been clearly documented, what is less well known is how differently these recordings were produced than those in the past. An example? The first Columbia session was made on October 26,1955, while Miles was still under contract to Prestige. It marked the inaugural recording of the great quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Despite the session's artistic success, it only yielded four quintet tunes, two of which Miles would remake in 1958. Compare that to how he worked at Prestige. Miles generated whole albums in a single or double session, often with personnel assembled only for the date. After signing with Columbia, he completed his Prestige obligations by recording 31 tunes -- five albums worth -- during three recording days. Listening to the alternate takes from the Columbia sessions and throughout the Mosaic set, it is evident that Miles worked hard to achieve truly great and beautiful performances. Through the Years At Columbia, Miles Davis and John Coltrane joined forces during three different time frames. The first was during the great 1955-56 quintet sessions that produced “’Round About Midnight;” followed by the sextet sessions (with Cannonball Adderley) in 1958-59 that produced “Milestones,” half of the “Jazz Track” LP, “Kind of Blue;” and the Newport and Plaza Hotel concerts. As the band evolved, Bill Evans and Jimmy Cobb replaced Red Garland and Philly Joe. Later, Wynton Kelly took Evans' seat. Finally, a 1961 reunion that resulted in two performances on “Someday My Prince Will Come.” Their recordings are all here in this collection, including nine tunes originally scattered across various compilations over many years that now have been restored to their proper chronological positions. Fourteen previously unissued alternate takes are included, as is a fascinating sequence with Leonard Bernstein coaching Miles on his performance of “Sweet Sue, Just You.” for Bernstein's "What Is Jazz?"
