Comus - First Utterance (Dawn DNLS.3019 1971)
This unique 1971 prog folk monster needs little introduction - you'll know how hard it is to find, in any condition, and many collectors have never even seen an original copy, let alone owned one.
Well, now's your chance - and you won't have to mortgage your house for it.
This is an original UK 1st press copy, with the Dawn orange labels, and matrices DNLS 3019A-3 ?T / DNLS 3019B-3 ?T.
The gatefold sleeve with the scary Roger Wooton artwork is in worn condition with rubbing and some minor damage to the spine, some edge, corner and ringwear, a six-inch seam split to the top edge of the back section of the gatefold, and a 5cm pen scribble on the back cover. It grades Good.
The vinyl? Let's do the good news first. The original orange Dawn labels are Excellent with clear lettering, no fading and only minor spindle wear.
Side 2 has some surface marks and hairlines but no feelable scratches, and grades Very Good. It plays through OK with occasional tics and minor surface noise at times.
Side 1 is rather a different story. It has a succession of feelable scratches across the surface of the vinyl. Tracks 1 and 2 do actually play through with regular tics and some surface noise. Track 3 sadly sticks and is best not attempted. Due to this Side 1 can only be graded Fair at best.
So clearly if you are looking for high quality audio, look elsewhere.
If you are keen to get a copy of this highly prized prog folk album – almost impossible to describe if you've never heard it – then please note the faults and bid accordingly! Even as a collection filler it's definitely worth having, and my reserve is realistic, when you consider copies change hands for £300-1000.
