Mingo Saldivar - "The Dancing Cowboy". A legendary conjunto tejano accordionist from South Texas, Mingo and his band (Los Tremendos Cuatro Espadas) has performed their dynamic fusion of conjunto, country, polkas and rancheras from honky tonks to the White House. And energized audiences around the world for over 50 years.
Mingo has been nominated for Grammy award, recognized with NEA National Heritage Fellowships, and played for presidential inaugurations. But Mingo is best known for his live performances and the connections he has with his fans and audiences. With his Hohner accordion slung at his waist, Mingo swings, dances and sings in a style that’s captivating and contagious.
Mingo Saldívar was born in 1936 in Marion, Texas, not far from San Antonio. He began playing professionally in 1959, but from early on he was influenced by "hillbilly," blues and other forms of American popular music. When he was in the service he was stationed near Nashville, and he remembers being impressed by the Grand Ole Opry, which had a lasting impact on his musical sensibilities. Back home in San Antonio, he began to experiment by blending conjunto with country-western. Soon he became known as The Dancing Cowboy -- partly because of his highly expressive stage movements and his cowboy outfits -- but also because of his deft incorporation of country-western into his conjunto style. Since the 1970s Mingo Saldívar, along with Flaco Jiménez, has been an ambassador for the Texas-Mexican conjunto. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and at President Bill Clinton's inauguration. His most important recording was Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," which Saldívar adapted both musically and linguistically to the conjunto style, demonstrating some of the possibilities for ethnic and stylistic cross-fertilization.
