Original 2-eye pressing of these rare first recordings of the work of one of the most unique outsider experimental composers of the 20th century. As a forefather of MIDI and computer music, Nancarrow created his amazing studies by composing directly onto player piano rolls by hand; they range from atonal deconstructions of ragtime, boogie-woogie, and blues to intricate tempo experiments to abstract patterned soundscapes, all highly rhythmic and most impossible to perform by human hands. With notes by electronic composer Gordon Mumma. Highly Recommended. (Collectors should note that these recordings are completely different from the ones made 10 years later for the 1750 Arch label, with most of the Studies played at a somewhat slower tempo for Columbia per the composer's own preference at the time).

Nancarrow lived a somewhat secluded life in Mexico City, creating his experimental compositions by hand on player piano rolls, and was introduced to the world by Merce Cunningham and John Cage, who selected and arranged his pieces for use in a dance work; Nancarrow studied under Nicolas Slonimsky, Walter Piston, and Roger Sessions, worked with James Tenney, was Gyorgy Ligeti's favorite American composer, is commonly paired with Harry Partch as a pioneer of American 'homemade' music, and is increasingly acknowledged as an important forebear of modern electronic, computer programmed, electroacoustic, and even hip-hop music, especially with his incorporation/proto-sampling of jazz/piano and use of unplayable rhythms and multiple tempi.
