This handsome 10" LP from Philips (A 00718 R, Dutch pressing, plum/silver Minigroove label, mono – no stereo edition exists, glossy laminated flipback jacket) features Cor de Groot's magnificent rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major Op. 58, recorded with conductor Willem van Otterloo and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the warm acoustics of the Brahms-Saal, Musikverein, Vienna, on 21 March 1954.

Cor de Groot was a splendid pianist and is an artist whose recorded legacy is richly deserving of systematic re-issue and renewed appreciation on disc. His Beethoven Concerto cycle remains a remarkable achievement, very much equal Serkin's contemporaneous survey for Columbia Masterworks.

There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The memorable cover photo of the pianist is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, this is close to NM. There is light creasing and very mild shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is occasional light surface noise, in general playback is superb, close to NM. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
