This rare and handsome LP from His Master’s Voice (ALP 1142, English pressing, red/gold label – ED1, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features Alfred Cortot in Schumann’s Carnaval Op. 9 and the Etudes Symphonique Op. 13 (including the 5 posthumous variations). 

Cortot set down Schumann’s Carnaval no less than 4 times – once in the acoustic era (1923), and then in 3 subsequent electrical recordings: 1927 – unissued; 1928, and this, his final account, from 7/8 May 1953, made in the warm acoustics of the école normale, Paris. The Etudes Symphonique survive in two performances – one from 1929, and this remake from 9 May 1953, also set down at the école normale. 

Cortot’s reputation and admirers grow with each passing year, and there can be little doubt that he remains one of the Twentieth Century’s greatest musician pianists, and his unique artistry is nowhere better illustrated than in the music of Schumann and Chopin. 

There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by William Mann, printed in English only. The cover photo/design is uncredited.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the laminated flipback jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor fraying to the laminate along the open edge, as well as slight wear at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are light marks and a small catalog sticker to one label. In terms of sound, although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
