What sets this 12 inch 78 rpm V-Disc record apart as very special is that Count Basie actually addresses the G. I.'s in the beginning and introduces Jimmy Rushing who sings in classic blues style his own composition Jimmy's Blues and the second cut Take Me Back Baby composed in collaboration with Basie himself. Several superficial scratches are visible on this side and there is significant surface noise during playing but Rushing's great voice and interpretation ride over it all. This is a gem of a record. I rate it as very good. The label on both sides is in very condition with minor stains and slight discoloring.
Someone must have had a terrific sense of humor in deciding what was to go on Side B because it is the absolute antithesis to the authenticity of Rushing and Basie in their soulful blues numbers on Side A If Sinatra were alive today, he probably do everything he could to recall every copy of this rendition of Old Man River. It is the whitest white boy version ever of this "Showboat" classic. The only virtue to the recording is that it illustrates how completely misunderstood African-American culture was among whites during the era of WWII. It's laughable. It's pathetic. It's embarrassing. If I were a teacher, I'd play it for students so that I could demonstrate the changes that have taken place over decades since Pearl Harbor. On thing for sure, ol' Blue Eyes didn't have a clue of what it took to "Lift that bail."

I spot audition all of the 78 rpm records on my vintage Dual Model 1219 with a 3 mil stylus and pay particular attention to surface areas that appear as if they will seriously detract from listening enjoyment. If the blemish is superficial, I clean the record on my VPI professional cleaner using Nitty Gritty 78 rpm cleaner and audition again. I will not offer any record that has a defect in the pressing or one on which the stylus will not track all the way to the end without commenting on the condition.
