Description
The Chuck Wagon Gang were the other Carter family. A.P. "Dad" Carter and his wife Carrie met in a singing school; they had nine kids, so started a gospel group to support themselves. Dad sang tenor, Rose Carter soprano, the wonderful Anna Carter alto, and Ernest "Jim" Carter sang bass and played acoustic guitar. At first calling themselves the Carter Quartet, by the time they reached a Fort Worth radio station in 1936 there was another more famous Carter Family, so they were named after a band they were replacing at WBAP. I first heard their records on Randy Blake's Suppertime Frolic from Chicago's WJJD in the early 1950s (Blake sold boxes of baby chicks through the mail for those who wanted to start their own chicken ranch.) The original lineup made over 150 sides and sold truckloads of 78s, but the Billboard chart paid no attention. I loved the group's close harmony. I am not the slightest bit religious, but the way they sing "We are climbing/ Jacob's golden ladder/ We are climbing/ Jacob's ladder to the sky" makes me wish I could share their simple, honest ecstasy. And their version of "The Church In The Wildwood" is even more beautiful that that of the more famous Carter Family. The sleeve and the LP are as good as new and the transfers are very good.
