For your consideration is a rare vintage 10 inch 78 rpm by Ernest Stoneman and the Dixie Mountaineers entitled Hand Me Down My Walking Cane b/w Tell Mother I Will Meet Her. Excellent early hillbilly sides on Edison Diamond Disc. Edison originally released his unique Diamond disc format in 1913 and marketed it as a high end, high fidelity alternative to the standard disc records which had come to largely replace his pioneering cylinder format. The discs had to be played on a special Edison machine due to the discs' unique specifications: they spun at 80rpm, were unusually thick, used an early form of microgroove technology that allowed them to play for longer than a standard 78 rpm disc and they were cut vertically (meaning the needle moves up and down to create the sound as opposed to left and right). The requirement for a pricey, special machine to play the Diamond Discs originally did not dampen sales significantly, as DD purchases increased throughout the early days of the venture and peaked around 1920/21. After this, however, with the invention of radio, portable players for conventional 78s, Thomas Edison's refusal to consistently record jazz, hillbilly and race music and the prohibitive cost of both the diamond disc records and their players, sales of new diamond discs fell sharply throughout the 20s and the final 5 years of production all saw massive, increasing losses. By 1927, almost no diamond discs were selling at all. The final year of production in 1929 amounted to an $8,000,000 loss and on Nov 1st, all production ceased permanently. Edison, the man who invented the record and the phonograph, was done with the industry for good. He would die only a short time later in the fall of 1931. No Edison masters were ever repurposed or reissued, even though Crown would acquire them in 1930. Rare item.

Please keep in mind that rather economical equipment was used and 78s only received a light cleaning. For the highest fidelity reproduction results, a correct sized, well maintained stylus should always be used and antique records should also always receive a deep cleaning with a stiff bristled brush and a non-alcohol based soap. I do not provide grading beyond what is required by eBay. All 78 rpm records, vinyl or shellac, will be shipped sandwiched between either thick cardboard or some spare 78 rpm discs to provide substantial reinforcement for uneven pressure placed on a package during shipment. The record sandwich is then suspended in packing peanuts on all sides. Packing peanuts are the optimal durable memory material as they will insulate your item against any acute forces such as a fall or any type of blow and unlike bubble wrap will not pop and lose their shape if subjected to a strong force.
