Crass Records Bullshit Detector 3 - Punk Compilation, 1984, 1st Pressing, VG+/NM

  • Open Full-Size Image

Description

When subversive Essex-based anarcho-punk band/art collective Crass, probably very much to their own surprise, found themselves selling a lot of records and making money they didn't buy supercars and mansions - they ploughed it straight back into the anarchist, feminist, animal rights and anti-fascist movements from which they had come. Part of the money went towards setting up and maintaining Crass Records, championing and giving a voice to bands with similar ideas and ideals to Crass's own, who would have been ignored by the big record labels.

The first of the Bullshit Detector compilations arrived in 1980 and, in addition to Crass, featured music from the some of the most no-compromise punk bands around. By 1982, when Bullshit Detector 2 appeared, the underground punk scene was burgeoning with so much good music being created that the album was extended to two discs, which would continue through to 1983/1984's Bullshit Detector 3 with no fewer than 41 tracks and would be the last of the double albums until 1994's Bullshit Detector 4, originally available only as an unofficial C90 cassette, was finally pressed on vinyl.

Now, Crass were probably the biggest of the underground punk bands at the height of the underground/DIY punk era, and their records are not difficult to find. However, as one might expect, anarcho-punks attach little importance to material possessions, including records, and as a result the vast majority of those records which still exist tend to be in a poor state - it is very, very rare to find an original, first pressing such as this copy of Bullshit Detector 3 in this sort of condition: were it not for a shallow scratch in Track A1 which, while not serious enough to cause the stylus to skip and resulting in only very minor surface noise for that one track, is enough to force me to downgrade the record to VG+ from the NM it would otherwise have got (and in fact, without the scratch a lot of people would have graded M, but like many old school record dealers I never use the M grade because a record that has been played cannot ever be mint and no record that hasn't been play tested can ever be accurately graded - therefore, no record can truthfully be graded mint).

Crass were almost as famous for their cover art as their music and politics, and rightly so - nobody else had ever managed to develop a style quite like it, with its quasi-militaristic home-made feel. This record has lost one of the original paper inner sleeves (it's been amusingly replaced with an old MFP inner featuring ads for some distinctly not-very-anarcho-punk bands such as Russ Conway, Dean Martin and the black and white minstrel show), but the original outer sleeve, which folds out into a 90 x 60cm spread packed full of cut-and-paste collage art created by members of Crass and the other bands on the album, is in exceptionally superb condition without any significant damage, staining or splits.

There's a full track listing below, and if you ever see a copy in better condition than this you're a very, very lucky person indeed.

(If you feel a little dubious about a record which Crass insisted was priced at £3.50 brand new being sold at a price this much higher, well, so did I. However, 100% of the money it raises will go to our charity which provides end-of-life care free of charge to more than 4000 patients every year, alleviating strain on the NHS. I like to think Crass would have approved of that.)

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
