Description
Released in 1970, 'Deja Vu' was the incredible follow up to CSN's debut hit album the previous year. In Japan the Lp was released towards the end of 1970 and no expense was spared in duplicating the famous "leather textured" gatefold jacket. In fact, I would say that the Japanese release is even more impressive in the way it looks and feels like an old, vintage leather photo album from mid-19th century USA. The idea for the artwork came from the mind of Stephen Stills and was carried out by friend and graphic artist, Gary Burden. Burden was given the task of capturing the band in a photo using the complex and elaborate technique of those tintype, sepia-toned pictures we've all seen in some history books depicting images and soldiers from the U.S. Civil War.
Needless to say Burden succeeded and today, considers this particular Lp jacket among his greatest achievements as a graphic artist.
Gatefold Jacket: Near Mint.....absolutely astonishing.....the weight of this jacket, the heavy texturing, the "stamped" price below on the back of the cover, [ (X) Y 2,000 MANUFACTURED BY NIPPON GRAMMOPHON CO. LTD. JAPAN KI 7007 ] the "gold-leaf" lettering on the front.....even the inner gatefold is slightly textured; all this combined to firmly establish that this Japanese manufactured gatefold jacket of CSNY'S 'Deja Vu' is a masterpiece of paper engineering.
Obi: Very Good (-) .......most collectors will readily admit that the Obi for this 1st Japanese issue is extremely rare. Despite the fact that it does has some wear and tear it is still in very acceptable condition and worth the asking price alone.
Double-sided Lyric/Insert: Near Mint.....beautiful condition with only some faint creasing in some areas.
Record: VG(-).......if I were like some sellers on ebay and only went by a "visual grading", I'd give this record a Near Mint ~ Mint grade. As the photos I've uploaded demonstrate, the surface of the vinyl shines and gleams like new.....it almost looks unplayed! However, there is an unusual warp which affects the 1st song to both sides. In addition, there is surface noise which runs throughout the record. But even with these deficiencies I easily concluded that had these defects not been there, the audio would have been the best I've ever heard for this album. That said, due to the grade of the audio, this shouldn't be considered a "playing copy" but rather, a true "collectors item" or in a sense, a "filler" (except, of course, for the Jacket,Obi, and Insert) and is therefore priced accordingly. Sold as is. Still, make no mistake, this is a VERY rare item.
