Here's a review of the Green Eyes EP (contained on this compilation LP)
This is again a classic NWOBHM cult release by an underground / underrated / unknown band back in '84. Hell, this is my kind of NWOBHM; straightforward, in your face, and bad-ass. I really love this EP, although it was released in 1984, when the movement of NWOBHM was coming to an end - a hiatus if you prefer. It's a shame that these guys never released a full-length album. Anyway let's get down to it, let's give this EP a listen.
The EP starts with the self titled song "Green Eyes" my personal favourite. It's a mid-paced song, with a couple of nice riffs and rockin' vibe. The kind of song that makes you nod your head. Glyn Morgan's voice sounds so bad-ass and fits well with the song. The only bad thing here is the absence of solo. Next on is "Jailbait". This song is a faster one, makes you wanna bang your head. Glyn sounds a bit like Ian Gillan here. Interesting solo, energetic playing and a catchy main riff. The last track is called "Moon Rising" and is a straightforward rocker. Nothing exceptional here, nice bassline, quite a cheerful song. On the downside, the solo is no masterpiece, but who gives a shit anyway. Just kidding, the instrumentation is fairly good. The lyrics are no poetry, but they fit with the songs quite good. The singer has his own unique way to sing each one of these songs, he has his own style if you would. He isn't copying anyone, he is trying to be authentic. The production is what anyone would expect from an EP back then. All instruments can be heard rather clear and sound like themselves. This vintage sound is what I love in NWOBHM, this makes any album better. That's because you can feel the instruments, they sound real (if you know what I'm trying to say here).
Well, these lads recorded three nice songs, with "Green Eyes" being capable of fitting in any NWOBHM compilation. As I said before, it's an unknown / underground band and this EP got to be recorded on the final years of the NWOBHM movement. I mean, if this had been released back in 1980 or 1981 that would be a different story, and they might have been a bit more famous. All in all, I think it's a good effort, nice riffing, rhythm and instrumentation, and an original NWOBHM release although it came out in 1984. Tough luck for these guys. I recommend this to any NWOBHM fan who wants to listen to a more underground / underrated band. Have fun listening.
