This has to be the best album Cult of Luna has put out yet. I've been a fan of theirs for quite some time, and have seen changes for the better and for the worse with different albums. I had finally come to terms that Somewhere Along the Highway was their best work, but Vertikal completely blew me away. If there was a word to describe the beauty of vivid darkness, it would be Vertikal.
From start to finish, Cult of Luna's latest album was masterfully produced and exquisitely written, meshing deep power chords with the appropriate growling of meaningful lyrics, harmonized by soundscapes and a dreary disposition to grin at. Using the 1926 film Metropolis as their inspiration, Vertikal is the pinnacle of Cult of Luna's work thus far.
If you are new to Cult of Luna, I would recommend holding off on this album until you give some of their earlier work a good listening. The years have proven to be the most effective teaching tool to this band, and Vertikal displays all of their efforts in an audio bliss. Jumping straight into their best work will not do it just, although I am certain anyone who is into this genre will thoroughly enjoy it. At least 2 of their previous albums will suffice, but listen to Somewhere Along the Highway just before Vertikal.
For those of you already acquainted with Cult of Luna, this album is a must. I've come across many who heard a few of their albums and said that they've heard all the band could offer. I highly recommend you challenge that notion by delving into their latest work, as Vertikal proves the assumption to be wrong in every way possible. Review By Mike S
