This handsome LP – a very fine collector’s copy – from Cziffra Productions (MCP 203, French pressing, red keyboard label, stereo) features Georges Cziffra’s transcendent accounts of Liszt’s Sonata in B minor S 178 and the “Dante” Sonata (Après une lecture du Dante), No. 7 from Années de pèlerinage, deuxième année, S 161 "Italie").

Although his playing may not have been to everyone’s taste, Cziffra was certainly among the great Lisztians and his accounts of the Hungarian Rhapsodies and Transcendental Etudes remain touchstone performances. These powerful and poetic readings of Liszt’s Sonata in B minor and the “Dante” Sonata are questing and generous in spirit. The sound is superb.

Both works were recorded at the Studios Barclay, Hoche, Paris on 30 January 1968 (producer: Norbert Gamsohn / engineer: Gerhardt Lehner).

The striking cover potrait of Cziffra carries the artist’s signature, but I cannot make it out. The interior panels of the gatefold jacket include auhoritative liner notes by Marcel Dupre, printed in French only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, this is close to NM, the only flaws being a tiny tear near the bottom of the spine and some discoloration to the rear panel. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very striking in appearance – overall, a truly excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
