Daddy Longlegs : Oakdown Farm 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st Vertigo Press 1971

This first pressing plays with stunning audio on both sides and 'as new' is no exaggeration.  Having listened to every track in full I can guarantee the clarity and warmth of the audio is incredible and I have only graded one track as Mint- all the others are Mint!  I have graded 'Wheeling And Dealing' on S1 as Mint- because of 3/4 barely audible statics on the intro!  The playback is so clean and precise and it is obvious it has hardly been played, it is a beautifully preserved first pressing.  It will be no surprise to heard that the vinyl is visually stunning and is another FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing up for auction.

The cover is in excellent condition with only light wear and the original inner (dated 0171) is in excellent shape also.

Visual description

The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has an immaculate glossy sheen with no scratches.  Under a bright light I could only see one faint 'line' on S1 and a couple of ultra faint hairlines that is all.  It really is visually stunning and the run out grooves have only a couple of faint marks on them.  The iconic Vertigo labels are so clean with barely any spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Rubber Tyre' plays to perfection and it continues to play with stunning clarity and depth from then onwards.  There is no interference to speak of not even a single dust tick and the fade out has no background either.  This is a Mint start to the album.

With complete silence in the dead wax 'Double Decker' plays to the same exact standard with perfect clarity all the way through.  Another Mint track.

The entire intro on 'Please Believe Me' is 'as new' and the opening vocal is just as clean.  It continues in the same way with zero intrusion and the jazzy piano instrumental is superb!  The remainder is faultless.  So far the clarity and depth of the recording is 10/10!  Mint

The gentle piano intro on 'Lonely Way' plays beautifully without any background and the opening vocal is equal to that.  The standard does not drop as it progresses and from start to finish I only noticed one barely audible dust tick.  Not bad for such a quiet track on a 53 year old vinyl!  Mint

'Sweet Louise' also plays with sublime quality with no interference.  Mint again.

The quiet intro on 'Wheeling And Dealing' has 3/4 very quiet statics and by that I mean barely audible!  The opening vocal is flawless and it continues to play with a clarity and warmth that is second to none.  The mid instrumental can correctly be described 'as new' and that applies to the rest of the track also including the percussive fade out.  I'm sure most would say Mint but I will grade as Mint- just to be safe!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Rusty Door' and 'Gambling Man' on S2 both play with pristine audio and again there is not so much as a dust tick to be heard.  The playback is perfect and both grade as Mint

The quiet and quirky intro on 'Clara Bell' has no background and this standard is kept as you get further into the track.  A very 'country' feel with this one and it plays with stunning precision from the first note to the last.  Mint

'Night Shift' blends their bluesy, jazzy and country rock 'sound' perfectly and this instrumental could not play any better.  A Mint version all the way.

This may be sounding a little repetitive now but what can you do when each track plays with such clean audio!  'Moog' is another example of a vinyl that has been hardly played and so well looked after also.  A more powerful track the clarity and definition of the audio is high end and the mid guitar solo is superb.  Through to the end it plays with unbelievable quality and again Mint is deserved.

'Boogie' ends the album with stunning audio as you might expect.  The deep bass intro has no interference and the opening vocal is just as strong.  It continues in the same way with no ticks, clicks, pops or static there just are negatives.  The long bluesy instrumental is superb!  Perfect clarity and that heavy bass sound is very much to the fore.  The final vocal section has no background and this without doubt a Mint conclusion to this fine album.

In summary this first pressing plays 'as new' and that is no exaggeration.  When I saw the visual quality I suspected it may play well but not this well!  The clarity, depth, power and warmth of the audio is phenomenal and there is no interference on either side.  As stated the record can hardly have been played and the sonic quality is certainly as strong as it was back in '71.  It may not be a 'typical' Vertigo but there is no denying the quality of the audio.

The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve

The cover is in excellent condition and the only obvious wear is a sticker removal mark on the front cover.  The top edges have only minimal rubbing and the bottom edges just have some rubbing towards each corner.  The spine remains strong and 100% legible with just one scuff in the centre and a couple of other minor specks.  All the corners have only light wear and the opening edge has only a couple of small crimps.  Aside from that one mark the front cover is very clean and the back cover is superb.  The inside of the gatefold is in fantastic condition also, a very strong example overall.

The original Vertigo sleeve had no poly-lined inner so I have put one in.  It has no side splits or tears and only a little age related fading around the edges and very minimal creasing.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with AT-VM95EN Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

The record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
