Label/Format: Vertigo – original full swirl on side one and large swirl on side two. Both have matt, smooth surfaces (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a very small few, light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 128 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Very Scarce: like so many on the hugely collectable label, this one sold in only tiny numbers. Hence seldom seen or offered. So many titles, quite possibly including this one, were quickly deleted, also many found their way into ‘bargain bins’ with huge stickers placed on the covers causing considerable damage, or simply sent back for recycling. The main issue with this very little played copy is inner sleeve dulling to the surfaces. This is caused by the record being left undisturbed inside the cover for many years. The polylining reacts with the record causing the dulling. Unless severe, it has minimal affect on sound, here this is on the lighter side of moderate and showing little in natural room light. Viewed under a very bright bulb it can be seen more. On a scale of 1 to 10, this about 3 to 4 (opinion is purely subjective, compared to some severe cases I have seen on Polydor records, this is relatively mild). In terms of usage marks, barely any, the inner sleeve dulls the vinyl a little leaving a pattern – simply a trait of not being used or seeing light-of-day for decades, for sure, this has been played very little.

The record does have a little gentle surface sound, mostly noticeable between some songs and on a few very quiet passages. Personally, this did not worry me to any real extent, this is an album that does not really demand to be played loudly being a gentle country-rock album. This also being played on a very sensitive system (as listed further down). With a lovely cover, very clean record and it’s rarity, I have no qualms in offering it. But this is NOT for the more discerning listener as it is NOT silent. I do reitterate again, any surface sound is mostly very quiet and gentle, and I still enjoyed the music myself. But be aware I have clearly mentioned this fact. For sure, it will please many collectors needing this elusive album and it is vastly better than a space-filler for any Vertigo collector. Truthfully, I feel the light dulling caused by the inner sleeve has little to do with any light surface sound, I think it is the pressing itself, which like other Vertigos I have heard before, are not always the quietest records ever made.

Brief Info: A one-off album by American country-rockers Daddy Longlegs. A typical very poor seller on this collectable and sort-after label. Opinion varys somewhat on this one: fans of the genre like it, some do not rate it at all. Pleasant easy music that attracted next-to-know attention here in the UK, and this almost sunk without trace like many others on Vertigo. I have outlined above this copy – due to being left untouched for decades – has fairly light inner sleeve polymer reaction to the surfaces, and it has a some mainly gentle surface sound in places. So again I state, not for the highly discerning for looks and sound, but I also state, it may not prove easy to find much better or less used. The lack of real marks or scratches with two beautiful Vertigo labels and very clean, little worn cover, are major positives.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howards, includes the Swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very clean and impressive with a real freshness retained. A small corner tip rub on the bottom right and any surface marks few and very faint indeed as seen with more scrutiny under angled light. No price sticker issues, and only a couple of ultra fine and faint surface creases that again, barely even register. This rare cover front sets a high standard.

Cover Back: All very similar again with just a little tip rubbing on the spine ends and a tiny tone spot near the top right. Again, any marks very light as seen under light and hardly any creasing at all. The lack of ring wear is a major plus as so few of these Vertigo non-laminates seen to avoid it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with little to fault at all, they hardly get a great deal better inside.

Top Edges: Both very straight with hardly any wear at all – both really exceptional.

Bottom Edges: Any rub traces very light and patchy, for these storage edges, again I consider them exceptional.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is very clean and unworn. The back entrance is also clean, mostly very sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on, this only on the outside edge, the inside is very sharp indeed and is a fraction shorter than the other in manufacture. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Overall, a superb spine that is very solid, straight with no compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A very small and fine surface rub has just clipped a couple of the catalogue number digits, all other text is perfect and unworn, even the vulnerable folds have avoided rubbing or scuffs. Just very small rubs at the very ends.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubs that few will avoid. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone and rare early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This very attractive, fresh item should please many collectors, and indeed this could prove a significant upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the Swirl inner has some darkening of the seam adhesive which always ages these inners a little, but few avoid it totally. A light stain on the front as well near the bottom. Overall, a little darkened with age but fully intact with hardly any creasing, two almost pristine window circles and clear (if crinkled) lining. No seam splits or repairs and this is date-coded 0171 (January 1971).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and never easy to grade a very lightly played record that has inner sleeve surface pattern/dulling. Any real usage marks are tiny, very few and faint as seen under bright light with NO penetrating scratches. As stated further up, the dulling is a well-known reaction to the polymers used in the linings of these inner sleeves. Polydor and Decca pressed records are the most common labels most at risk of this (but far from exclusively so), and it is very common to see. So without it, I would have graded the record as more Excellent(+) for looks. Still a very fine visual copy that is clean, but has a more ‘matt’ appearance now rather than a deep shine, and solidly pressed. Visually still a very nice record that should please many collectors, but NOT for the more discerning visual ones.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: As stated further up, this record has some gentle surface sound in places. This I feel sure is purely within the pressing itself, and is hardly unusual for this label. Between some songs, more surface sound is heard, which I feel IS due to the back inner issue. I have this sound before from records with this issue, and is a familiar sound. Trace of which can be heard on the odd quieter area, but generally this record still sounds fine. It still offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. There is NO wear to the actual music, any surface sound, which is generally light and gentle is nothing to do with wear or usage. Daddy Longlegs play a gentle country-rock and not music that needs to be played at high volume. I played at my usual moderate level and the surface sound bothered me very little – but that is just my subjective opinion – everyone is different. The fact this record has not been used or seen light-of-day for decades has slightly gone against it, but make no mistake, this rare Spiral album will still take a fair degree of beating and has many positives for sure. An elusive album for the right collector, but again, NOT for those who want perfect ‘silence’ from a 43-year-old record at any cost. Way above a ‘filler’ copy, this is still a lovely example with gorgeous labels, impressive cover and still fine sound. One I can still solidly recommend for the right collector.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
