DAEVID ALLEN - BANANA MOON - ORIGINAL 1971 BYG/ACTUEL VINYL GATEFOLD LP - BYG RECORDS CATALOGUE NUMBER 529.345
For auction, this incredibly scarce original vinyl copy of this Progressive/Jazz-rock gem released on the French label BYG in 1971, usually infamous for its roster of Free-jazz giants i.e. Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, Sun Ra etc...
This is an unusual Jazz-rock excursion for the label at the time and features stalwarts of the revolving Gong/Canterbury scene. It also features input from, other than GONG mainstay DAEVID ALLEN, ROBERT WYATT (SOFT MACHINE, MATCHING MOLE), MAGGIE BELL, BARRY ST-JOHN, ARCHIE LEGGETT, GERRY FIELDS, GARY WRIGHT, PIP PYLE, NICK EVANS AND 'SUBMARINE CAPTAIN (CHRISTIAN TRITSCH OF GONG). All to a greater or lesser degree, revolving members of the '70's Uk/Europe Jazz and rock scene.
The sleeve is mainly in Very Good++/Excellent condition overall with some very minor denting on the right-hand edge of the gatefold.
The Vinyl is mostly in Good++/Very Good condition apart from an unfortunate mark across the very first track. This sounds as a slight click over the 3 minute duration of the opening track but I think it doesn't mar the enjoyment too much. The rest of the album plays great with just a few minor surface noises here and there. Overall a great copy of what is an incredibly rare original version of an unsung gem in the Gong and related body of works, impossible to find these days in any condition, let alone one as playable as this.
