Vasili Damaev was named the Russian Tamagno, because of the power of his voice, that could ride over any orchestra. Vasili Damaev was born in the Russian province at the village of Otradnaja near Ekaterinodar on April 7th., 1878. During his childhood, he learned to play the violin, and sang in the church chorus. In 1895, when he was in the city of Majkop, he was heard by a well known musical critic I.Gar. His voice made a strong impression on Gar. Vasili Damaev went to Moscow, where, in 1903, he took vocal lessons from A.Uspenski. During 1904-05 years, he studied at the Moscow conservatory in the class of the well known tenor M. Medvedev. Starting in 1906, Vasili Damaev sang at the private Zymin Opera House He was the first tenor at that theater until 1920. Starting in 1921, his voice showed degradation because of the heavy diverse repertory he sang. Nevertheless, he kept singing till 1924. During his best period, Vasili Damaev participated in successful tours in Paris and London (1911,1913-Russian seasons of Diagilev). In 1913, Vasili Damaev sang with success in Monte-Carlo. His repertory consisted of approximately 50 roles, among the best were Sadko, Levko, José, Otello, Raoul, Radames, Canio, and Cavaradossi. He recorded about 40 records for Beka (1905), Gramophone (1910-1914), Pathé (1911). During 1931-1932, Damaev worked at the Moscow theatrical museum. Vasili Damaev died in Moscow on October 11th., 1932
