Description
MONSTER GARAGE FUNK RARITY from the back woods of Pennsylvania (or so we can assume) - Darkseid's "Space Bass" b/w "Shamokin Woman" from 1971 on the Darkseid label. The guide to Pennsylvania garage singles, "Sounds from the Wood", guesses that these guys were from PA, since Shamokin is a small town in the southeast part of the state. I'm not sure how hot the women are in that part of the state (gotta take a drive out there later today, I guess), but I love the play on words - "Shamokin' Woman" sounds like someone with a lisp describing a beautiful woman. Musically, this "Shamokin Woman" is garage blues, loud and raw with battered vocals. Great stuff, for sure, but the REAL star of this rare single is the flipside, "Space Bass" - a KILLER heavy slab of dark acid funk with a vocalist who fancies himself the Amish belt version of Jimi Hendrix. If the liquidy keys and monster wah wah funk guitar don't sell you, then take a sample of this guy's preachings: "I'm the prophet of the cosmic loving man. My sign of peace is the star-spangled dove...get your head together in the milky way-ay now...I'm your spaced space man - follow my guiding hand!" What's even stranger than the words are the WAY the vocalist sings 'em - he sounds affected, possibly just stoned, - at best a strange androgynous hybrid of Bootsy Collins and Jobriath, at worst a man whose first language may not be English. Nevertheless, a Hendrix-inspired blast of acid funk psych from rural Pennsylvania is still something wonderful to behold, and something that doesn't pass down the streets of Shamokin very often.
