Following on from last year's exceptional, 'Eternal Hails', Norwegian black metal legends, Darkthrone, continue their prolific ascension towards legendary status with yet another addition to their ever-expansive catalogue. 'Astral Fortress', exudes much of the experimentation and forays into thrash and speed metal the iconic duo of Fenriz and Nocturno have made commonplace over the past decade, while notable nods to their tremolo-picked, frosted origins abound. From the shifting, harrowing audible spectacle of the eight-minute opening behemoth, 'Caravan Of Broken Ghosts', to the atmospheric nuances of synthesizers and mellotron that weave throughout the title-track, it's evident that on album number 19, there isn't even a modicum of stagnation brimming from a project that owes nothing to the scene or its followers, yet still opts to deliver time and time again.
