Jazz Impressions of The USA - 8 tracks - 1956 USA made 2 x 4 track 12" shellac coated metal recording discs (acetates) housed in 2 New York address "Audiodiscs" Sleeves
Discs - light use , just a couple of very faint surface traces - the discs play well on the correct Bang & Olufsen playing equipment , with some mild surface presence - I have not cleaned the playing area , or the centres where the acetate crayon info is situated
Acetates are metal based Recording Studio only Metal Discs coated in Nitrocellulose Laquer for tape - to - disc transfer , the sound grooves are lathe machine cut onto the acetate ...... (saying an acetate is 'pressed' is nonsense) An acetate is cut from the Master Recording Tape which is transfered to acetate - sometimes the finished mix acetate is Electro-Plated (Tin Chloride Solution and Liquid Silver) , and the mould taken from the acetate is used for the actual pressing of commercial discs (after being electrically coated with Nickel for production ) . Very often acetates were used by many artists to hear how a recording was progressing , and to hear the 'feel' of the mix - maybe just one was cut in the studio , then taken home by the artist to listen to their new work in progress ...... Acetates by their nature are not intended for extensive play , as the sound begins to deteriorate if played too often - as mentioned they are usually used for 'work in progress' reference by the artist
Note - An interesting point is that many Silver Disc Awards for artists were actually the Tin Chloride / Liquid Silver moulds re-sprayed and mounted for presentation . This is why you see that Silver Disc Awards have the correct matrix numbers pressed / scratched into the run off grooves ..........
