Any album that opens with "Anyway You Want It" already has a leg up over most of the competition around it. Arguably the jewel of the Dave Clark Five's singles output, it's a song that has aged every bit as gracefully as, say, "I Saw Her Standing There" or "A Hard Day's Night."So Coast To Coast opens strong and it gets better, blooming into an amazingly diverse yet consistently powerful record made up entirely of group originals. These mostly take us into the DC5's own, uniquely energetic renditions of Merseybeat-style harmonies, on "To Me" (a song that might be as fine as anything that Lennon and McCartney wrote on the Beatles' first three albums, with its exquisitely lyrical saxophone break by Dennis Payton), "I'm Left With You" (which calls to mind "This Boy" in the most favorable way), the soaring "Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)" (which offers some of Lenny Davidson's most flamboyant rhythm guitar work), and the haunting "When," with its larger-than-life piano and rhythm section. Surrounding all of this surprisingly elegant songwriting, singing, and playing is some first-rate rock 'n' roll in the form of "Say You Want Me" (a close cousin of "Anyway You Want It" in sound and timbre), "Don't You Know," and "It's Not True." Had there been an actual rock press in 1964, or if the Dave Clark Five been taken more seriously sooner, Coast To Coast would probably be regarded today as something close to an essential British Invasion record, if, perhaps, not as seminal as, say, the Beatles For Sale LP, but definitely more solid and important than all but one other album: (It's The Searchers) by the Searchers.

The only serious competitor to the Beatles (except, possibly, for Stones) at the height of the British Invasion, Dave Clark Five provided some of the most creative "Beat" sounds of the British Invasion wave.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original, all-yellow Epic stock inner sleeve

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Back cover has a tiny peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker.  (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
