This is a promising-follow up. It's clear they're trying for something more melodic than the one-trick stomping rhythm on Glad All Over. They don't rely so much on the call-and-response act, they harmonize, they add tasty little details in their songs to make them stand out more--that smoky organ-sax interplay on I Love You No More, for example. But rest assured, the sound is just as thick as it was on the previous record. You won't be confusing this for a record by The Hollies.

Mike Smith really does have a strong singing voice throughout. And the band functions very, very well as a unit. There's real talent here. Not too hard to see why these guys were invited on the Ed Sullivan Show a record times.

Even the songwriting is generally a step up. Can't You See That She's Mine is positively early-Beatles quality. The two that follow are also quite solid--between three openers here, there's more diversity and solid melodies than the whole of the debut.

And now that I've buttered you up, let me give you fair warning if you do decide to check this out. The choice in cover material is atrocious. On Broadway? Freaking Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah? Is this what they thought American audiences wanted? Skip, skip, skip. Their thick sound on the instrumental Rumble isn't terrible, though, swapping the organ & sax for the iconic guitar part. But who was picking this? Can't blame the manager for crappy material when your bandleader IS the manager...

Just play the A side. A compilation of the best tracks from this and Glad All Over would compete with the best of the other early British Invasion LPs. Curse of the record industry in 1964. But, eh, nobody's forcing you to buy filler-laden albums anymore, go build your own playlist on Spotify. Definitely snap up the good stuff here. The Dave Clark Five were a really good Merseybeat act in their day, when they buckled down.

As is the case with other Dave Clark Five albums from the mid-60's, Mono versions of the group's albums are much more sparkling, raw, direct and otherwise gratifying than the fake "electronic" stereo versions (true stereo versions do not exist). The only serious competitor to the Beatles (except, possibly, for Stones), Dave Clark Five provided some of the most creative "Beat" sounds of the British Invasion wave.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)         CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-) TO VERY GOOD, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)         Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(c)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(d)         True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a tiny dent/peel-off mark on the front panel (less than 1/8 square inch in size)

-       Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the bottom seam.

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
