Although he had been Depeche Mode’s lead singer for 23 years at that point, Dave Gahan had never written any of the songs (that duty would fall upon either Vince Clarke or Martin Gore.) His collaborator and songwriting partner on this album was Knox Chandler, who had previously worked with The Psychedelic Furs and Siouxsie & The Banshees. Production was handled by Ken Thomas, best known for his work with Sigur Ros. Three singles were released from this album, the most successful being “Dirty Sticky Floors.” Its modest success encouraged Gahan to begin contributing songs to later Depeche Mode albums.
