Dave Lee Trio, Piano Moods Volume Nine.
Original 1957 UK Pye Nixa Jazz Today series EP, NJE 1038.
An unusually clean survivor of a rare EP, enginered by Joe Meek and featuring great playing and recording.
Vinyl has a very high sheen with no obvious marks. Just a very few superficial hairline scuffs and a couple of dots of greyish patina.
The quiet A side intro has just a little extremely soft and unobtrusive crackle. (That said, in all the years I've been dealing in vinyl I've never found one of these Pye Nixa Jazz EPs which plays completely silently.) Once the volume picks up playback is superb. Notably the separator band is silent. There is just a very short instance of two or three low level scuffs right at the very end fade-out.
Side two again a little crackle to the quiet opening but this is very much in the background and unobtrusive. Aside from this plays beautifully. There are no ticks or clicks whatsoever.
Notably the labels have no rubbing or wear and are still a sonorous dark black. No spindle activity is noticeable at all.
The sleeve has also survived well. The record was discovered in a closed storage case and no doubt has spent much of its 65 years this way. The sleeve has an unusually high gloss to both fully laminated front and rear. The rear retains a nice whiteness. Backflaps are crisp and unworn. There is just a very faint crease line around the outline of the vinyl. The only real blemish to the exterior of the sleeve is a patch of discolouration from a removed sticker to top left front. There is, however, no debris, surface loss, or laminate loss, and there is no tugging of the surface material here. The interior of the sleeve has a few tan dots of marks to the very edge of the rear entry side. These appear slightly oily rather than signs of browning etc. They are unobtrusive and not visible to the exterior of the sleeve.
