Manhattan Latin captures Dave Pike in flux between the straight-ahead approach of his earlier sessions and the psychedelic pop-jazz of his efforts for MPS: a playful yet methodical immersion into pure, sunkissed groove, its artful assimilation of global rhythms and textures anticipates the direction of Pike's most memorable work. Recorded with an impressive lineup including flautist Hubert Laws, drummer Willie Bobo and then-unknown pianist Chick Corea, the album largely eschews familiar Latin standards in favor of Pike originals. What's impressive is that the end result seems completely organic, living up to the album's title in terms of both sophistication and flavor. Phenomenal cover, too.

According to the source we acquired this item from, this album comes from a personal estate of the legendary producer and impresario ►Milt Gabler who, as an owner of Commodore Records personally supervised and produced Billie Holiday (her tragic “Strange Fruit” was released on Commodore label  because Columbia would have none of controversial “protest” songs in their catalog) as well as, among many other hits, Bill Halley’s “Rock around the clock” (need we say more?). It can be argued that Milt Gabler was one of the two or three most important record producers  of the XX century.

(b)          The record comes in its original stock inner sleeve (we can see it  through the opening).

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some small writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner, in black marker, about ¼ x ¼ inch in size)

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
