DAVID ACKLES 1968 UK ELEKTRA 1st *MONO* PRESSING LAMINATED MacNEILL COVER, I/2 PLAY, WONDERFUL LP

DAVID ACKLES
David Ackles

ORIGINAL UK ELEKTRA (EKL 4022) FIRST *MONO* PRESSING OF DAVID ACKLES' SUPERB SELF TITLED DEBUT LP FROM 1968 FULL OF DARK AND BROODING SONGS AND IN LOVELY CONDITION PROBABLY ONLY HAVING BEEN PLAYED ONCE OR TWICE - ONE LABEL HAS ONE/TWO LIGHT SPINDLES, THE OTHER LABEL IS PRISTINE AND HAS NONE

PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (very thick and chunky) WITH THE FIRST ISSUE MATTE AND HEAVILY TEXTURED ORANGE ELEKTRA LABELS
MATRIX: EKL 4022 A1 / EKL 4022 B1
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FULLY LAMINATED SLEEVE"Printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd., London, S.E.1"

'Road to Cairo' is the parenthetical title that was given to David Ackles' debut by Elektra Records in the US, much the same manner that the eponymous Elton John LP was referred to as "Your Song." Although both artists have roots as singer/songwriters, Ackles' music is decidedly less pop-oriented and stylistically resembles Leonard Cohen and Tim Buckley with their darker and brooding melodies.
Although a far cry from being a bestseller, the title was universally praised by critics (and latterly cited as a major influence on many artists) and the track "Road to Cairo" received significant airplay becoming a minor hit not only for Ackles, but also for the Julie Driscoll-led version of Brian Auger & the Trinity.
While the entire effort seems shrouded in a palpable, yet indefinable mood, the truly noir pieces -- such as the harrowing "Sonny Come Home" -- are complemented by the inviting "What a Happy Day" and the languid elegancy of "Blue Ribbons." The closest thing to an uptempo number on this disc is the restrained camp of "Laissez-Faire." Ironically, with this attempt at jollity, Ackles' vocals negate the mood, turning it to the delicate realm of dark comedy

Track Listing:
Side 1: The Road to Cairo / When Love is Gone / Sonny Come Home / Blue Ribbons / What a Happy Day
Side 2: Down River / Lassez-Faire / Lotus Man / His Name Is Andrew / Be My Friend

LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO unwanted marks/writing and only one, possibly two light spindles on one label, none on the other
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN and the surfaces are practically UNMARKED (there are some light pressing blemishes within the vinyl but barely any marks on the vinyl surfaces themselves)
VINYL Audio: SUPERB MONO CUT with a DEEP, RICH SOUND - BEAUTIFULLY RECORDED. On playback at a very LOUD volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are NO scratches, sticks, jumps or even any surface noise. There is however, the occasional, intermittent click and pop but nothing I ever found intrusive on listening to this wonderful LP and there is no real evidence for these clicks on the vinyl surfaces. The LP plays extremely well throughout with NO distortion or groove-wear (it's hardly been played) and is critically graded as a strong EXCELLENT for audio. Very nice copy indeed (NOTE: even though I cleaned the record on my Moth MKII Pro Cleaning Machine before its first play through, on subsequent plays (I have listened to this album several times this afternoon and it really is quite wonderful) the 'clicks' mentioned above become less prominent. The LP has remained stored and unplayed for the last 40 years or so so these 'clicks' are more than likely caused by dust/dirt trapped in the grooves which may be moderated by subsequent plays and cleaning)
SLEEVE: The original FULLY LAMINATED sleeve is in VERY GOOD+ condition. The laminate has a BEAUTIFUL DEEP GLOSS to both the front and back surfaces with some evident light record impression and a few light creases (please see photos). The top and bottom edges and the spine are unworn and the spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) displays all text CLEAR and BOLD. Overall, a very well preserved example
