Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with barely any spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The odd tiny dull spot seen under light being critical. For a 43-year-old record, both are very impressive and all evidence strongly suggests this has hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: A highly talented American singer-songwriter, this the second of four albums Ackles made between 1968 to 1973 – none sold in any great numbers but they are very highly regarded. Many famous artists have lauded his work and said he was highly influential including Elton John. Another major admirer is Elvis Costello who wrote after his death in 1999 “It’s a mystery to me why his wonderful songs are not better known”. His self-titled debut failed to sell well and this was the follow-up that was awarded a larger budget. It has a far more expansive sound with more instrumentation but major success again proved elusive. A quite intense album, it reminded me a little of Tim Buckley with some powerful expressive vocals. This a lovely and hardly played record, it sounds superb, and for those unfamiliar, it can take time to appreciate his undoubted talent. But like the very best artists and music perseverence rewards.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with a matt smooth finish. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: Clearly a dark and wear-prone cover: this front has little in real terms and will not prove easy to find much better. A small rim rub arc near the bottom edge and some gentle rub traces on the edges and corner tips. Clean with rich colour and barely any creasing, any tiny surface blemishes only really show with scrutiny under angled light.

Cover Back: Against the odds, the back is even better with little to fault at all. The lack of ring wear on a cover like this is almost remarkable. Just tiny rub traces on the edges and little else.

Top Edge: Straight with fairly light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Again straight with more moderate consistent rubbing, hardly unusual on the traditional storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring gentle and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with some patchy compression, the ends are nipped in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn and well centred.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite uncompromising early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. With most of any wear mostly confined to the bottom edge, this attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a Polydor-style inner with little wear and two immaculate crisp window circles and very clear lining. Mild darkening of the seam adhesive only with overall light discolouration and minimal creasing. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is date-coded 0970 (September 1970), so a very early copy indeed as seen in close-up.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just one light surface mark on side two, any others are ultra fine brush traces as seen critically under bright angled light. Finding this vintage record better will prove immensely difficult and it should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce original record plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record from a still somewhat under-appreciated artist. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
