DAVID BOWIE - The Man Who Sold The Wold (Dress Cover & Misprint) - LP UK 1971 SUPERB LP RARE
A widely sought-after original album that never fails to be mentioned in any list of rarities is the original UK edition of "The Man Who Sold The World" on the Mercury label. What makes this album even rarer is the misprint of the producer's name "Tony Visconti" being spelt as "Tonny".
Due to its rarity, the dress sleeve (or "drag cover" as it is also known) and the vinyl have been counterfeited twice, in Japan in the late 70's and in Italy in the early 80's. The latter can easily be identified as it has a poorly reproduced sleeve that lacks the original's textured appearance and has white (rather than jet black) record labels. Whereas to differentiate the former counterfeit from the original, there are some major pointers that you'd need to look out for :
1. Front cover - Bowie's feet touch the right opening edge on the counterfeited sleeve. Whereas on the original, his feet are away from it.
2. Sleeve texture - Wax was used on the counterfeit sleeve to reproduce the original wallpaper-like sleeve. Whereas the original has matt texture to it.
3. Spine - Holding the cover face up, the spine has Mercury, the title and catalog number printed running from right to left (inverted) on the counterfeit. Whereas on the original, they run from left to right.
4. Record label - It is of dark grey colour with a silver edge, "® 1971" and a space in the word "BROADCASTING" on the counterfeit label. Whereas on the original, it is of jet black colour with no silver edge and has "? 1971" with the correct spelling of the word "BROADCASTING".

Cover - Made of thin and fragile cardboard .. fully textured sleeve.. crystal-clear prints on the spine with straight opening edges.. slight storage wear on the top and more pronounced on the bottom edges, faint sticker residues at the top-right corner and a partially-pealed cover where the price sticker is.. conservatively graded Very Good+++ to Near Excellent.
Labels - Superb condition.. rare misprint of Producer Tony Visconti's name being spelt as "Tonny Visconti".. crystal-clear prints on the jet-black labels.. estimated about three to five plays.. just a slight blemish close to the Side 2's spindle hole.. graded Near Mint.
Spine - Superb condition .. crystal-clear prints.. the image doesn't do justice.. graded Near Mint.
Vinyl - Superb condition.. still retains its original gloss.. hardly any blemish at all.. graded Near Mint to Mint visually. Superb sound quality, just very soft background statics in a very few places.. graded Near Mint to Mint aurally.
Inner Sleeve - Stains close to the bottom edge.. graded Very Good.
