Bowie rushes through a 5-song Ziggy set on this, his best live album. It's clear who this is for, and it's not David. If you want to hear Ziggy performed with real passion and intensity look to Santa Monica '72. Okay? Okay. That aside this is a fascinating and, I'm gonna say it, underrated live document from the Thin White Duke. Make sure your tracklist isn't the chronologically sequenced one, but rather the one that begins with "Warszawa". It's a ballsy move to begin a Bowie concert 7 minute instrumental, and those balls deserve to be on display here. Regarding the four instrumentals: they're enjoyable. It's nice to hear them in a less sterile context, but there's little attempt to do anything other than replicate the studio versions.

The real genius of Stage is in the other 8 songs. Bowie's band is on absolute fire here, and you can really feel the love for the material. "Station To Station" is for my money Bowie's masterpiece and this version might just be the definitive one. It's absolutely scintillating. As are the other two tracks plucked from his best album, Station To Station. "Stay" in particular is a spasmodic delight. The vignettes from Low are transformed. "What In The World" is slowed to half-time throughout it's half time giving it a completely different feel, only to speed through the gears in it's second. "Breaking Glass" climaxes with Bowie breathing "can I touch you?" over nothing but a drum-beat (to which the whole audience is clearly thinking "of course you can you sexy devil"). "Fame" illustrates just how tight this band are, eclipsing the groove laid down in the studio effortlessly. The one track you'd most expect to end up being a let down by comparison is "Heroes" but it's a fantastic version. The reason? Bowie is just one of the greatest singers of all time. And he nails the bit that you want him to nail (you know the bit). So yes, there's some inessential stuff here but that stuff the rest is indispensable.

(b)          The records are apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The album is believed to come with the original Bowie fan club insert.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The cover has a 4" razor-like line (cut) on the back panel, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intact and no part is missing, but the razor line is visible.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the spine and the bottom seams (nothing significant)
