Rare single recorded and released when Bowie was still in search of stardom. These tracks have been re-issued several times, including an 'unofficial' (i.e fake/bootleg/counterfeit) 3 track e.p., but this is the rare, genuine, original 1st UK press from May 1971.
After he returned from his promotional tour of America in February 1971, Bowie went to work recording demos at an impressive rate. These sessions included early versions of ‘Moonage Daydream’ and ‘Hang on to Yourself’ recorded in April 1971 at Radio Luxembourg’s London studios.
Bowie had signed a new publishing deal with Chrysalis in October 1970 and Chrysalis suggested releasing these tracks as a single to recoup the costs of the demo sessions. To bypass Bowie’s Mercury contract (which was due to expire in June 1971) it was decided to release the single under an assumed name, and so the debut single by ‘The Arnold Corns’ was released on B&C Records in May 1971. Needless to say, the single was a flop, but the following month Bowie started working on the tracks that would be released as Hunky Dory at the end of the year.
The vinyl is in superb condition and I would visually grade it as Excellent to Near Mint.
