Description
Here is David Bowie's LP/33 rpm entitled "The World Of David Bowie." From 1970. Decca SPA 58, Stereo. Stamped matrix reads: ZAL-9453.P-1W. Imported from UK and into Cleveland back then. I vaguely remember seeing this LP in a downtown Cleveland record store and it wasn't in the regular bins yet. Was on a metal display stand as it had just come in. I thought he looked interesting and did see his name somewhere else before, so I grabbed it. This cover was when he had shorter curlier hair! No one knew too much about Bowie yet in 1970. Cleveland was his first USA gig at the Music Hall back in September of 1972. I was there! This LP is sort of a more mellow sound for Bowie, not the Ziggy Stardust thing, but it was the beginning. It's almost like a pop-English folk sound. Great vocal and backup band. He really changed or extended the sound and look of rock for all of us. Definitely Cleveland misses him heavily! Cleveland even shined blue lights onto the tall Terminal Tower downtown on Monday, Jan. 11, as a tribute to him, thinking of his words "Planet Earth is blue and there is nothing I can do...". I saw Iggy Pop at the Cleveland Agora back in 1977 (he played a lot at Cleveland clubs) and Bowie was with him at that show!!! Now that was a treat!

The cover looks pretty good as it has the UK laminated cover that gives it a shine. There is a removed sticker at the upper right corner. There are a few wrinkles showing on the cover, too. Back cover shows dark ringwear not all the way around yet. There is a blue pen mark with my initial D upside down at the right hand upper side. There is a rip of the top layer of the cover right at the right middle side, too. Comes with original inner paper sleeve lined inside with plastic. Blue Decca label. There are some spindle marks on both sides.Vinyl: Side 1 does have several super light surface scratches and I do seem some light scuffs. One particular small scuff is on song 6, Silly Boy Blues, but it did not cause any skips or pops. Side 2 has way less of this and almost looks like a Near Mint version. I played it through with no problems (using my Technics turntable/KLM speakers). All sounds crisp and great. Here and there I did hear some super light crackles, but in a regular room listening to this you can't hear that. With my ears to the speakers on purpose to listen for flaws, I did hear some, but absolutely nothing that deters from the great sound.
I rate the cover as Very Good Plus (VG+) only, due to the back cover rip-type area. Vinyl gets an Excellent (EX) as it has quality sound!

Guidelines I use to rate the quality of these records (based on the Goldmine Grading Guide):
NM: Near Mint - Vinyl, still shiny, as if opened for the first time. No writing or stickers on the vinyl. No obvious scratches. Label: No writing or stickers and no fading of the label. LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or similar defects.
NM-: Near Mint Minus (My grading item/description). Similar to NM but will have some very light scratches on the vinyl not affecting the sound quality. No writing or stickers on label and no fading (or ringwear) on cover or label.
EX: Excellent - Not quite a Goldmine Standard Listing, but being used by many now. Cover: No ink wear, minor creases to corners, no seam tears. Vinyl can have scratches, but not felt by your fingers. Sound quality must be mint. No more than 15% of the surface should have wear or scuffs on it. To me, EX is like a VG++.
VG+: Very Good Plus - Similar to NM- except that on the label, there may be a sticker or writing, but it shows very little wear. There may be only a couple light surface scratches on the grooves, but do not affect the playback with noise or skips. You may only see these scratches if you put them under a bright light and really look for them. The cover might have light creasing or minor seam or corner wear, but still in great condition to show off.
VG to VG-: Very Good to Very Good Minus - May not be that shiny anymore and you will see scratches without putting it under a bright light, but they still would not affect the quality of the playback. The sound quality is still pretty good, maybe a little noise, but not enough to detract from the listening experience. The label might have some fading around it, besides having stickers or writing. The cover may have obvious ringwear in the middle or around the perimeter of where the record was, maybe some side seam splits, or little tears at the top or side where the record goes back into. If less defects, then it's a VG. If it has all this just mentioned, then a VG-.
G, G+: Good or Good Plus - It doesn't mean the vinyl is trashed. It plays though without skipping, but may have heavy noise or fuzz sound because of age, quality, or worn-down grooves. Heavy writing or stickers on the label, ringwear is very obvious on the cover and cover probably has seam splits. But, amazingly, for the vinyl, if you have special audio LP recording software, you could probably clean up those crackles and fuzzes, if you want to create a CD of it for yourself.
P: Poor - This is when the vinyl is warped to the point it warps the playback also. Or it's cracked, but it may or may not still play without a skip. If a picture sleeve is with it, this is torn or marked up bigtime. But someone may want to have it for nostalgia or even attempt to fix it.
