UK RCA (SF 8287/LSP 4702) SECOND PRESSING (1973/74) OF DAVID BOWIE'S ICONIC "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" WHICH PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT WITH PRACTICALLY NOTHING TO FAULT - CRYSTAL CLEAR, CLEAN, BRIGHT AND WARM SOUND - GREAT COPY, COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL LYRIC INNER WHICH HAS NO SPLITS
PRESSED ON QUALITY MID-WEIGHT VINYL (much heavier weight than later pressings)
THE ALBUM HAS THE RCA SMOOTH, GLOSSY ORANGE LABELS WHICH CARRY THE "MainMan / Chrysalis" publishing credit - THIS WAS FIRST USED IN DECEMBER 1972, CHANGED FROM "Titanic Music Limited / Chrysalis Limited", BUT AS THE INNER STILL RETAINS THE OLDER CREDIT AND THE SLEEVE HAS NO "MAINMAN" LOGO, I WOULD SAY THAT IS COPY IS A VERY EARLY SECOND PRESSING PROBABLY DATING FROM AROUND 1973/74
MATRIX: BGBS 0864 - 2E / BGBS 0865 - 2E
AND IT'S HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT SLEEVE, "Printed in England by Robert Stace" WITH NO MainMan LOGO ON THE BACK (which is present on all copies printed after December 1972)
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL LYRIC INNER SLEEVE (again, with the first issue "Titanic Music Limited / Chrysalis Limited" credits)
Borrowing heavily from Marc Bolan's glam rock and the future shock of A Clockwork Orange, David Bowie reached back to the heavy rock of The Man Who Sold the World for The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie's fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread.
Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam.
Mick Ronson plays with a maverick flair that invigorates rockers like "Suffragette City," "Moonage Daydream," and "Hang Onto Yourself," while "Lady Stardust," "Five Years," and "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" have a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard of in rock & roll. And that self-conscious sense of theatre is part of the reason why Ziggy Stardust sounds so foreign.
Bowie succeeds not in spite of his pretensions but because of them, and Ziggy Stardust -- familiar in structure, but alien in performance -- is the first time his vision and execution met in such a grand, sweeping fashion

LABELS: Clean, bright and unmarked with just the smallest amount of rubbing around the central hole but no evident spindle traces - this copy has seen little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, like new glossy sheen and is practically unmarked but for what appears to be a small pressing blemish on "Soul Love" - this has no audio consequence - EXCELLENT+/NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: Beautiful crystal clear, warm, deep and rich audio reproduction - "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME" as suggested on the back of the sleeve and when play-graded at a very loud volume there are no major audio issues to report - no jumps, no sticks, no scratches and no loud clicks/pops - it plays beautifully throughout with maybe just the lightest hint of surface on the quiet drum beat fade-in to "Five Years" (but I did play this very loud indeed). Otherwise, a great copy which plays to a very high standard with great clarity, no discernible groove-wear or distortion and is critically graded an EXCELLENT++/NEAR MINT for audio
SLEEVE: The first issued sleeve (no "Mainman") is clean, bright and fresh with practically no wear to speak of on the edges or spine - where all text is clear and bold. The surfaces are clean, unmarked and unrubbed with only the lightest of record impression - a very fine, beautifully preserved example which has been kept in a protective cover all its life - EXCELLENT++
INNER SLEEVE: The original inner with "Titanic Music Limited / Chrysalis Limited" credits is clean, fresh and unmarked but most importantly it has no splits which is very rare as the inner which is printed on thin paper and is very delicate. There are some light handling creases but nothing major. Again, a very fine example indeed - EXCELLENT++
The LP will be posted in a new inner with anti-static liner to avoid any 'knifing' of the original during transit
